What’s the Difference Between an English and an Anglo Concertina?
English concertinas are unisonoric, meaning they play the same note on both the push and pull of the bellows. This makes them ideal for English folk music and perfect for playing chords, especially when accompanying ballads and sea shanties.
In contrast, Anglo concertinas are bisonoric, producing different notes on the push and pull. They typically follow either the Wheatstone or Jeffries button layout and are much more common in traditional Irish music.
