The Wild Wooden Whistle in D

The latest addition to our Wild Whistles is in the key of D and has been produced in collaboration with Tommy Martin.

The main body is crafted from African Blackwood, Olivewood, or Rosewood, which are high-quality tonewoods that give you more power, clarity and punch, and offers greater harmonic complexity.

It has a conical bore that tapers so that it’s slightly wider at the top. And the tone holes have gently undulating bevels in between them, so that you can keep the first and second octaves in tune together.

On to this main body we’ve added a classic Wild Irish brass and delrin fipple, but one that’s been slightly modified so that it’s closer to a C whistle than a D whistle.

The result is a beautifully balanced D whistle that effortlessly reaches the highs you usually only get with a C whistle. With a sound that's impressively robust, powerful and crisp.

The main body of this whistle has gently undulating bevels in between the tone holes that give it a genuinely unique look and feel. This means you can move your fingers back and forth between holes without having to fully stop them, so you can play in the ‘chanter’ style of the uilleann pipes. Which is particularly useful when playing the pacier tunes in Irish trad.

The combination of the tapered bore, the modified head, the undulating bevels in between the tone holes and the fact that it’s crafted from African Blackwood, Olivewood, or Rosewood all come together to produce a D whistle that doesn’t sound (or look) like any D whistle you’ve ever heard or played before.

If you want something a little softer and more mellow, Olivewood is a lovely choice. It has a warmer middle register and a more relaxed, organic character under the breath.

If you’re after a classic woody tone, Rosewood is the one to go for. It’s warm but still clear, with a little more brightness than Blackwood, easy everyday playing.
