The Wild African Blackwood Whistle in D

The latest addition to our Wild Whistles is in the key of D and has been produced in collaboration with Tommy Martin.

The main body is crafted from African blackwood, which is a particularly dense hardwood that gives you more power, clarity and punch, and offers greater harmonic complexity.

It has a conical bore that tapers so that it’s slightly wider at the top. And the tone holes have gently undulating bevels in between them, so that you can keep the first and second octaves in tune together.

On to this main body we’ve added a classic Wild Irish brass and delrin fipple, but one that’s been slightly modified so that it’s closer to a C whistle than a D whistle.

The result is a beautifully balanced D whistle that effortlessly reaches the highs you usually only get with a C whistle. With a sound that's impressively robust, powerful and crisp.

This means you can move your fingers back and forth between holes without having to fully stop them, so you can play in the ‘chanter’ style of the uilleann pipes.
