The most popular music you tend to hear on a 5-string is bluegrass, as bluegrass players really appreciate the extra volume you get from the resonator.

This banjo is built with a mahogany resonator, and has a Gibson-inspired flange with a mahogany rim, a combination that produces mellifluous tones and a sound of unmatched depth and heft.

The other feature that will appeal to bluegrass players is the 22 fret, mahogany neck, because you need all of those 22 frets to explore the full repertoire of tunes and different playing styles.  

And it’s not just for bluegrass! You’ll be following in the footsteps of Ireland’s legendary Luke Kelly.

Luke was given a 5-string Merlin banjo by Tommy Makem when Tommy was playing with the Clancy brothers in New York, in the 1960s. And for a long time, Luke brought that trusty 5-string banjo with him absolutely everywhere he went.

What Does the Resonator Do?

The volume of the sound you get from a 5-string banjo depends on its resonator, because it’s the resonator that prevents the sound from being absorbed into your body, and redirects it out into the room where you’re playing. And the depth and weight of that sound depend on the material you use, which is why we insist on using mahogany.

Your Strings Generate the Tone

We use carefully selected D’Addario strings on all our banjos as the quality of the strings you use is absolutely fundamental for a banjo’s sound. While the strings on a 22 fret banjo are more tightly wound than they are on a 17 or 19 fret banjo, so it produces brighter, crisper tones with greater volume.
