Introducing the new Liberty 5-string banjo, a banjo designed for enthusiasts and musicians who enjoy playing live folk music, whether that's bluegrass or Irish trad.

We’ve given this banjo geared planetary tuners which are especially responsive, as this makes it particularly easy for you to tune as you play, adjusting it in response to the different kinds of music you’re playing.

It has a mahogany resonator, as mahogany gives you richer, warmer tones (compared to maple), which is what many musicians are looking for when playing traditional folk music.

And it has a 22 fret neck, as those extra frets allow you to explore a wider range of tunes and playing styles.

And although the 5-string banjo is usually associated with bluegrass and American country, it has deep connections with Irish trad as well. Most famously thanks to Luke Kelly.

Mahogany Resonator for Richer Sound

The volume and tone you get from a 5-string banjo depend on the resonator and we’ve made this banjo using a mahogany resonator. Mahogany and maple are the two best tonewoods for a resonator, but mahogany has a softer grain than maple, so it produces a sound that is richer and warmer, and is that little bit more mellow. Which is what a lot of musicians prefer when playing folk music.

Brighter Tones & Great Volume

The strings on a 22 fret banjo are more tightly wound than they are on a 17 or 19 fret banjo, so it produces brighter, crisper tones with greater volume. While the strings themselves are specifically selected D’Addario strings, which are the ones we use on all our banjos, as the quality of the strings you use is absolutely fundamental for a banjo’s sound.
