Tunes from the Goodman Manuscripts CD by Mick O'Brien, Emer Mayock and Aoife Ní Bhriain

'This album is intended for the serious listener of Irish traditional music. But happily, it can be enjoyed by just about everyone else too. The playing from each of the three artists is absolutely top notch...' -
TradConnect

Tunes from the Goodman Manuscripts is the debut album from the virtuoso trio of Mick O’Brien (uilleann pipes/flute/whistle), Emer Mayock (flute/whistle/pipes) and Aoife Ní Bhriain (fiddle, viola, concertina).

As its name implies, this album is an exploration of tunes from the 19th Century collection of James Goodman which played a hugely important role in preserving traditional Irish music from pre-famine Ireland.

Featuring both tunes unique to the collection, and versions of tunes that are well established in modern repertoire, this recording carries the listener back in time on a journey of old Ireland and its soundscape.

'The manuscripts provide unique insights into the evolution of Irish traditional music and are of great significance because they preserve much of the traditional music of the south of Ireland as it was sung and played in the years before traditional culture there was devastated by the Great Famine of the 1840s.'

Listen to Track 01 (An Róguire Dubh/ Airgiod Caillighe):

Featuring the father-daughter duo of Mick O'Brien and Aoife Ní Bhriain, it's hardly surprising that the music flows effortlessly. Mayo piper and flute player Emer Mayock, blends seamlessly with the pair.

Together the trio succeeds in bringing to life the largest recorded selection (to date) from the Goodman manuscripts, through thoughtful interpretation and tasteful arrangements. No less than would be expected from these master musicians!

'On reflection, we’ve always approached it as three musicians who interpret the music, knowing that another three musicians will interpret it differently.'
- Emer Mayock

In 2014, the acclaimed trio were honoured with a TG4 Gradam Ceoil Award celebrating their musical collaboration:
