What is a Harp Guitar?

 

Although having many interpretations, the Standard Harp Guitar is an acoustic guitar with a set of open, fretless, harp-like bass strings attached to the top of the body closest to the player.

The amount of extra strings isn't always the same for each, but typically a section of six strings set above the standard six strings is what’s most commonly seen.

 

How old are they?

Harp guitars are not as new as we think and have been dated as early as the 19th century!
 
Nowadays though, they’re mostly used in contemporary acoustic guitar compositions and revolutionised by artists such as Michael Hedges, Andy Mckee, Don Ross, and Antoine Dufour to name a few.

 

Standard Guitar vs Harp Guitar:

While the standard acoustic guitar is a very adaptable instrument capable of playing in hundreds of different styles, its biggest drawback is its range.

This is what makes the Harp Guitar so valuable, because not only do you have a standard acoustic guitar, but the six extra-low harp strings as well to allow you reinforce your guitar playing with low bass notes without an extra bass guitar or other instruments.
