MMM Voicing

When speaking about the accordion the term voice refers to the number of metal reeds fitted to the treble/melody side of the instrument. As you know, these reeds produce the accordion sounds. When a single key is pressed on the treble end of an accordion, one or more reeds are sounded to produce the note. The number of voices which sound for each note refers to the number of reeds which are sounding at the same time. Thus, a three voice accordion sounds three individual reeds each single key time a button is pressed.

Which Accordion Tuning Is Right For You?

The short and simple answer is that on a traditional B/C button accordion you’ll move your fingers more, but the bellows less. On a C#/D box however you’ll move your fingers less, but the bellows more.

The bellows action can affect the flow of the sound:

• B/C accordions typically have a smoother, more fluid sound - many modern button accordion players favour this flowing style, particularly for jigs and reels, and this is where the B/C accordion excels.
• C#/D accordions are associated with a much more punchy, rhythmic sound. C#/D accordions are commonly used in the dance music of the Sliabh Luachra style of playing, where the emphasis lies on punchy rhythms. Its edgy sound and rhythmic drive is perfect for playing lively slides and polkas.
